“What if my dream clients aren’t active on LinkedIn?”
I hear this concern constantly.
But, there’s a huge difference between being active and being present.
Your dream clients might not be posting daily or commenting on every thread, but they’re absolutely there.
In fact, recent stats show that just over 50% of LinkedIn users are lurkers – that’s half a billion people who log in regularly to watch, observe, and silently consume content but rarely (if ever) engage.
They’re watching. They’re reading. They’re evaluating.
They’re just not raising their hand.
The Foundation: Make Yourself Lurker-Friendly
Before we talk about finding lurkers, you need to make sure you’re speaking their language when they do find you.
1. Your profile needs to speak directly to your dream clients.
When lurkers check you out (and they will), they should immediately think “this person gets me.”
If your profile reads like a generic resume, you’re missing the boat.
Need help with this? I’ve got the best LinkedIn profile guide that walks you through exactly how to make your profile client-magnetic.
2. Your content needs to address their actual problems.
Not industry buzzwords. Not what you think sounds impressive. Their real, everyday challenges.
And show social proof that you’ve helped people like them solve exactly those problems.
When lurkers see your content and think “wow, they really understand my situation,” feelings lead to actions.
Sometimes they’ll even reach out first.
Lurkers Leave Breadcrumbs
The key is recognizing their quiet version of “hello.”
- Profile Views They saw a post that intrigued them and wanted to learn more about you.
This is exactly why your profile needs to speak directly to your ideal clients.
- Follows (Personal + Company) They’re interested but feeling shy about connecting.
Don’t overlook your company page followers – I recently signed a client who was silently following my company page.
He was literally tasked with figuring out LinkedIn sales but never would have reached out if I hadn’t made the first move.
- Likes (Look Closer) Sure, many likes come from fellow creators and colleagues.
But lurkers sometimes feel spicy enough to leave a like.
Check who’s engaging and reach out: “Thanks for the support on my post about X! Anything particular hit home for you?
- Poll Participation Even though polls aren’t as trendy as they were in 2022, people still can’t help but vote.
Silent watchers are way more likely to vote than comment. Follow up with voters!
- Newsletter Subscribers Most people aren’t active on LinkedIn, so finding other ways to communicate is critical.
Since starting my newsletter, I’ve signed 2 lurkers directly from it.
LinkedIn also has a newsletter feature. Fun fact: the first edition gets sent to your entire network. Overnight I got 1,500 subscribers. That’s 1500 people I can “warm” reach out to.
The Proactive Approach
Here’s what most people get wrong: they create content hoping lurkers will reach out first.
But the biggest opportunity is being the one who makes the first move when you spot these warm signals.
That profile view or follow is hottest in the first 48 hours.
Don’t wait. Reach out.
Not with a pitch. With genuine curiosity.
Start Small, Think Big
You don’t need thousands of followers to build a profitable business.
You need the RIGHT people paying attention.
And those people? They’re already there, quietly watching.
Your job is to:
- Make it easy for them to find and connect with you
- Recognize their breadcrumbs when they drop them
- Be brave enough to make the first move
While everyone else is chasing vanity metrics and algorithm hacks, you’ll be building real relationships with people who actually need what you offer.
That’s sustainable. That’s scalable. That’s smart.
Toodles!
